FRESNO, CA --- For the second game in a row, Concordia held an 18-point lead with less than seven minutes to play. Unlike Tuesday's nail-bitter, however, the Eagles showed a killer mentality in the closing minutes of a 66-46 win over Fresno Pacific.
Led by a double-double from senior forward Karen Carney and 15 points from All-GSAC senior Nicole Fu, the Eagles win their sixth in a row and improve to 9-3, including 4-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
Fresno Pacific, which shot just 25 percent (6-for-24) in the first half, falls to 7-8, 0-5 GSAC.
"We did a much better job of clock management, especially toward the end of the second half," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "We've been stressing clock management all year, and we saw that tonight. We were smart with the ball and used time to our advantage to protect the lead."
A three-pointer from senior guard Patrice Hunter--who finished with 13 points--put the Eagles ahead by a 55-37 score with 6:24 remaining, and the Eagles their foot on the throttle the rest of the way, allowing the Sunbirds just nine points the rest of the way.
The game itself was out to a sluggish start when the two teams combined for just 19 points in the first nine minutes, but senior guard Britnie Priest came off the bench to give the Eagles a much-needed spark.
Priest first subbed in at 11:53 mark, with the Eagles down, 10-8, and she scored all 11 of her points by the break, scoring eight of her 11 points in the paint to give Concordia a 32-20 lead heading to the locker room.
"Britnie Priest was outstanding in the first half," Hansen said. "Her size and ability with the ball made her a difficult matchup for Fresno Pacific. When we brought her in, we were having a hard time breaking through, so she played some very effective minutes."
Taking its dozen-point lead back onto the court, Concordia held a comfortable lead throughout the second half, leading by double-digits for 19 of the game's final 20 minutes.
Living with the memory of Tuesday night's 18-point advantage with 6:45 left whittled down to just two points with 30 seconds remaining, the Eagles took care of business in a similar situation tonight--and in Fresno, where Concordia had not won since the 2007-08.
As a follow-up to Hunter's trey that put the Eagles up by 18 with 6:24 remaining, the Sunbirds buried their next shot, and Hunter missed an attempt on the offensive end and fouled to give Fresno Pacific a single-bonus opportunity.
Fresno Pacific missed on the first end of its 1-and-1 chance, however, and Hunter grabbed the rebound before finishing on a layup to make the score 57-39 and keep the momentum on Concordia's side.
The Eagles held a 42-36 advantage on the boards, led by 10 rebounds (six offensive) from Carney and 10 (seven defensive) from sophomore forward Camesha Patton.
"We talked to Karen (Carney) at halftime about crashing the boards harder, like she had been earlier in the year," Hansen said. "She had a great second half, and came up with some big rebounds for us as the game progressed."
Carney ended the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard Tyler Howard chipped in nine points.
The Eagles next take on Cal State Bakersfield in an exhibition tomorrow night (Friday, Jan. 7), starting at 7 p.m.
