Caleb McCurry Wins Shot Put and Trey Williams Takes 400 Meter Title
On Friday and Saturday, April 27th and 28th, the Concordia men's and women's track and field teams competed at the 2012 GSAC Championships in Azusa, CA. The event was hosted by Azusa Pacific University and was held at Cougar Stadium. The Concordia men finished in sixth place with a final score of 68. The women placed seventh with a score of 42.
In the women's 100 and 200 Meter Dash, CU's Emily Ramey made it as a finalist in both events. Emily's final time in the 100 Meter Dash was 12.86, and 27.28 in the 200 Meter Dash. CU's Trey Williams placed third and second in the 100 and 200 Meter Dash, respectively. Trey's final times for the 100 and 200 Meter Dash were 11.16 and 21.64. His 100 M time is a new personal best. Trey placed first in the 400 Meter Dash, with a final time of 48.34. Samantha Moser made it as a finalist in the women's 100 Meter Dash and the 400 Meter Dash. Samantha's final time in the 100 Meter Dash was 13.10, and for the 400 Meter Dash it was 1:00.33. CU's Arielly Conde was a finalist in the women's 1500 Meter Run, with a final time of 5:13.22. The Eagles' Jordan Baker came in third in the women's 100 Meter Hurdles, with a final time of 15.24, good for her new personal best. Jordan placed second in the finals for the 400 Meter Hurdles. Her final time was 1:02.67, which is the second fastest she has run. Baker qualified for the NAIA National Meet in both events. Elle Pace made it to the finals for Concordia in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase, with a final time of 13:15.73. The Concordia men's relay team placed fourth in the 4x100 Meter Relay, with a final time of 43.74.
CU's Bryan Harkins placed third in the men's Long Jump, with a final distance of 7.05 meters. In the women's High Jump, CU's freshman Mary Suing had an impressive jump, with a distance of 1.55 meters, placing her second. Leah Jaeger placed sixth out of 18 competitors for Concordia in the Javelin Throw, with a final distance of 34.59 meters. Caleb McCurry stood on top of the podium in the men's Shot Put, while teammate Joshua Allen came in third. Caleb's final distance was 16.62 meters and Joshua's was 14.24 meters. Caleb placed second in the Discus Throw, with a final distance of 47.75 meters. Senior Tommy Faust set a school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 111 feet. On the day, the men set nine personal bests and the women set 10, including 12 season personal bests.
"Our athletes competed well and it was exciting to see some new national qualifiers and conference champions," head coach Jim Brewer said. "They put in the hard work and it really paid off."
The Eagles have one more meet before the NAIA National Championships, May 24-26, in Marion, IN. Some Concordia athletes will travel to Cal State LA on May 12 for one last chance to qualify for nationals. The Eagles have had four athletes qualify for the national meet. Junior Caleb McCurry has qualified in the shot put and discus. Junior Trey Williams will compete in the 400 meter and 200 meter races. Senior Bryan Harkins qualified in the long jump. Senior Jordan Baker will compete in the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles. Junior Emily Ramey is currently ranked 17th in the heptathlon and needs to be in the top 16 to make the NAIA Final Meet. She will look to improve her standing at Cal State LA.
