IRVINE, CA --- Boasting seven years of coaching experience at the NCAA Div. I level, Dan Fisher has been named the eighth head coach in Concordia Volleyball history, Director of Athletics David Bireline announced Wednesday.
Fisher played for nearly a decade at a variety of elite levels before beginning his coaching career in 2004 as the top assistant coach at his alma mater, D-I power University of Pacific.
He then moved on to D-I programs University of San Francisco (2007-09) and Hawaii (2009-11), where he served as Associate Head Coach for the women's and men's programs, respectively, gaining valuable experience in preparation of his first head coaching position.
"We are very pleased to announce the hiring of Dan Fisher as our head volleyball coach," Bireline said. "Dan brings in a very impressive résumé as a successful player and coach, but what we are most excited about is what Dan brings to our staff in terms of Christian leadership and character."
Fisher played two seasons 1998-99 at Pacific, where he is currently fourth on the all-time charts with 3,007 career assists--highest in school history among two-year players--as a standout setter and team captain.
With his collegiate career behind him, Fisher played three years on the U.S. National Team, beginning in 1999. He also played professional volleyball internationally, making stops in Belgium, Spain and Switzerland while playing in Association of Volleyball Professionals beach tournaments from 2001-06, finishing as high as 13th twice.
He began his coaching career in 2003 while playing professionally in Switzerland, serving as head coach for the youth girls' team located in the same town as his professional team, Appenzell-Gonten.
In 2004, Fisher was named First Assistant Coach of the men's program at University of Pacific, a position he held until 2007, when he was became Associate Head Coach of the women's program at University of San Francisco.
He then went on to accept the same position in the men's volleyball program at University of Hawaii in 2009, and has played an integral role in the team's improvement from a 9-18 team in 2009 to a combined 34-23 over the past two seasons, where the team has made back-to-back trips to the Mountain Sports Pacific Federation postseason.
He takes over an Eagles Volleyball program that has advanced to the NAIA National Championships in six of the past seven years and has played into the semifinal round or better five times--twice playing in the national title round.
"I am very excited and thankful that Dave (Bireline) would trust me and give me this opportunity," Fisher said. "Now that it is setting in a little bit, I am looking forward to getting into the gym with this team. There has been a great foundation set here at Concordia, and I am looking forward to building on that."
Fisher, a life-long Lutheran, graduated from University of Pacific in 1999 with his bachelor's degree in sociology and a minor in religious studies, and he then earned a Master of Arts in sports science from UOP in 2008.
Fisher and his wife, Joni, will be celebrating their sixth wedding anniversary this August.
"Coach Fisher comes to us with great credentials," Concordia Executive Vice President, Chief Enrollment Officer Gary McDaniel, Ed.D. said. "His accomplishments on the court are evident, but what excites me most is his commitment to building a program that is filled with integrity and character.
"He understands that coaching and mentoring young women on the volleyball court is a great honor and privilege. Dan understands that this new challenge requires a Christ-like leader who will work hard each and every day to create a program that emulates what Concordia Athletics stands for."
Fisher is expected to begin head coaching duties at Concordia in mid-June, though a specific date has not been set.

His coaching record speaks for itself, and I have known his family for many years, including both his parents and his grandfather. The values they conveyed in terms of honesty, integrity and morality are certainly part and parcel of Dan as well. Overall, an excellent choice!"
