Two Cold Streaks Equal Two Big PLNU Runs

The Concordia women's basketball team fought hard against Point Loma Nazarene on Tuesday night on the road, but came up short, 69-57.

Melody Chavez led the Eagles with 19 points, going six-of-16 from the field, and all six of her baskets were of the three point variety.  Amanda Fielder had a double-double with 14 points and ten boards.  Elisha Taylor and Carly Bishop added 10 points apiece.

CUI came out firing, scoring in a variety of ways, and taking a quick 10-0 lead.  PLNU responded with a 13-3 response and with 8:51 left the game was knotted at 13s.  During the next four minutes the Sea Lions raced ahead on the heels of a 16-3 run.  CUI played them even the last four minutes and trailed 36-22 at the break.

In a repeat of the first half, the Eagles came out of the locker room ready to compete.  After a Carly Bishop and Melody Chavez three, they had cut the margin to four at the 15:30 mark.  But over the next seven minutes the Eagles fell victim to another PLNU run.  This time it was an 18-7 burst by the Sea Lions.  Amanda Fielder almost led the Eagles all the way back as she scored in the paint on multiple occasions, but CUI ran out of time and could not climb all the way back.

Nikki Kraus kept the offense flowing with eight assists, but CUI was outrebounded 59-41.  Concordia struggled from the line, going eight-of-18 for 44%.  The Eagles kept themselves in the game with 27 points off 21 PLNU turnovers.  In the end the rebounding margin was too much as the Sea Lions led in 2nd chance points, 13-4.

With the loss the Eagles dropped to 6-10 and 3-6 in the conference.  The Sea Lions improved to 13-8 and 4-5 in the GSAC.  Concordia plays at home on Saturday against Fresno Pacific at 5:30 pm as part of the 2012 Homecoming festivities.  Catch the live stats/live stream at www.cuieagles.com.
