IRVINE - Concordia University has announced the
hiring of Ken Dory, longtime Irvine High School boys' swimming coach,
as the new Director of Aquatics, responsible for heading up the
initiation of swimming and water polo programs for both men and women."I am delighted that Ken Dory has accepted our offer to begin men's and
women's swimming and water polo at Concordia University," said athletic
director Dr. Tim Preuss. "Ken is a man of faith and integrity with a
great track record as the coach at Irvine High School. He is the leader
that we need to build these programs on a solid foundation."
Dory brings over 20 years of coaching experience to Concordia,
beginning back in 1985 as the head coach of the Greentree Gators Summer
Swim Team. He continues to direct the program each summer with 120
children ages 5-18.
His prep coaching career began back in 1989 at Irvine High School,
where he was won 14 city championships. In total, Dory has led the
Vaqueros to 60 team championships in his 17 years at the helm,
including the 2001 state dual meet championship. He led the team to
10-consecutive league championships from 1995-2004 and won back-to-back
Orange County and CIF championships in 2000 and 2001.
Adding to his accolades, Dory was chosen as the Orange County Register
Orange County High School Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2000. He was
also named the L.A. Times Orange County High School Coach of the Year
in 1998 and 2001. Dory has been a member of the CIF Swimming Advisory
Committee since 2003 and a NISCA member since 1992.
Dory prepped at Foothill High, where he was a team captain in 1983. He
went on to swim two seasons at Orange Coast College before finishing
his collegiate career at Cal State Northridge, where he was also chosen
as team captain.
"The opportunity to start a program from the ground up only happens
once and I'm both fortunate and excited to have the opportunity to
start the aquatics program at Concordia, said Dory. "Everyone I have
spoken with at Concordia shares and enthusiasm for aquatics that I
believe will contribute to our success."
The Concordia aquatics teams will train and compete at the William
Woolett Jr. Aquatics Center, a world class training facility located at
Heritage Park in Irvine.
"We are pleased to welcome Ken to our staff," remarked Preuss. "He is
widely respected in the local aquatics community and the University is
excited about this opportunity to provide a great education and a
tremendous experience for aquatics athletes in a Christian college
environment."
The men's water polo program is scheduled to begin intercollegiate
competition in the Fall of 2007. The swimming programs compete during
the winter months, culminating in the NAIA Championships in March of
2008. The women's water polo team will play its first matches during
the Spring of 2008.
