The road was rockier today, but the result was the same, as #7 Concordia defeated UC Santa Cruz 3-2 on Saturday afternoon, January 5, in the second game of the two-day doubleheader inside CU Arena.  Concordia defeated UCSC 3-0 on Friday.

The Eagles were again led by Dillon Auxier with 17 kills, 16 digs, and three blocks.  Naseri Tumanuvao added 10 winners and Chad Barretta had eight.  Brett Anema had seven kills from the middle with three blocks.  Mark Metrakos made a huge impact with nine kills and five blocks.  Kevin Fiske dealt out 44 assists in addition to 15 digs.  Concordia was out-blocked 12-11.5.  CU hit .155, while UCSC hit .134 as both teams were better on the defensive end.

The first game was sideout until 6-6 when UCSC went on a 5-1 run to lead 12-7.  It got worse for CU before it got better, as the Banana Slugs pulled ahead 19-12.  CU responded with four straight with kills from Anema and Tumanauvao, and an ace from Auxier, forcing a UCSC timeout.  UCSC won five of the last seven points out of the break to win 25-18.  Concordia hit .029 in the set, compared to .344 for UCSC.

It was Concordia who took the early 13-8 lead in the second game with kill from Anema, block from Anema and Auxier, and multiple Santa Cruz errors.  The Eagles held that five-point edge before extending it to six, 17-11, on a UCSC attack error.  Metrakos scored an ace to put CU up 21-14, and Concordia went to the finish line with the 25-20 win.  The Eagles hit .225 in the game, compared to -.037 for UCSC.

The third set was back-and-forth through the first 13 points, before Santa Cruz scored two straight.  Concordia hung around though, and eventually tied the game at 19 and took the lead on a Metrakos ace.  It was sideout from there until Santa Cruz led 24-23, forcing a CU timeout.  CU scored three straight out of that timeout, with a kill from Metrakos, block from Chad Barretta, and UCSC error to win 26-24.  Concordia hit .118 in the game, while UCSC hit .079.

UCSC dominated the fourth set early, 11-5, and the closest Concordia could get was 20-16, before eventually losing, 25-20.  Concordia struggled hitting .067 and Santa Cruz hit .222.

The Eagles fell down quickly in the fifth set, 0-2, but scored 11 of the next 14 points, led by kills from Tumanuvao, Barretta, Metrakos, and blocks from Fiske, Metrakos, and Vincent Rodriguez, to take the dominating 10-5 lead.  Concordia added two more to the lead on a kill from Anema and block from Auxier to win 15-7.  CU hit a scorching .615 in the final set, while UCSC hit .000.

Concordia improved to 2-1 on the weekend, while UCSC leaves Irvine 0-2.  The Eagles are back in action on January 16 at 7 pm at Cal State Northridge.
