The #15 Concordia Eagles could not overcome a large second-half deficit as they fell to Arizona Christian 84-82 in their first GSAC game of 2013 on Tuesday, January 8 in Phoenix, AZ.  The game marked the first GSAC game for ACU and first meeting between the schools in history.

Dakota Downs, DeLaun Frazier, and Alex Rudd each had 15 points for the Eagles.  Downs recorded his fifth double-double of the season and 11th of his career, with 11 rebounds, going five-of-seven from the field.  Frazier went five-of-eight from three and Rudd was six-of-eight from the field with two threes.  Concordia was out-rebounded 44-38 and the game was as even as the score.  Both teams shot 46% and 60% from the line.

Concordia took a four-point lead, 9-5, on a Frazier three six minutes in, and after an ACU basket, regained the lead on a Nolan Abernathy layup from Frazier.  ACU scored six straight to take a two-point edge, but Concordia fought back to tie the game three times before taking a 28-27 lead on a Frazier three with 5:20 left in the half.  Frazier followed with another bomb and Abernathy finished a Tim Harris steal on a fast break for the six-point lead.  ACU responded on an 8-1 run to regain the lead they would never lose.  They finished on an 8-2 tear to lead 45-38 at halftime.

ACU held that lead until they hit a jumper four minutes in and made two free throws to lead 56-44.  Concordia was unable to break into the lead and fell down 14, 64-50, with 8:58 left in the game.  The Eagles scored six of the next seven points on a Frazier three and a three-point play from Lucas Simpson to pull within nine.  The Firestorm pushed it back to 12 at the 6:39 mark and 11 at 5:34.  CU started cutting into the lead from there.  A layup from Peter Smith and three from Rudd cut it to six.  ACU extended their advantage back to eight with 2:03 remaining, but a Rudd three cut it down to five.  ACU converted a layup, but Downs followed a Smith miss at the other end with a tip-in plus foul.  He converted the free throw to make it 83-79 with one minute left.  After a steal, Concordia got to the line, but could not convert the freebies.  They got an offensive rebound, missed a jumper, grabbed the rebound, but missed a three.  ACU missed their free throws at the other end and Frazier nailed a three with 11 seconds left to cut it to one.  Arizona Christian made one free throw, but Concordia could not convert a layup with three seconds left to fall 84-82.  Concordia dominated bench points, 41-12, but saw four ACU scorers in double figures.

Concordia fell to 11-4 and 0-1 in the GSAC, while ACU improved to 11-2 and 1-0 in their first conference action.  The Eagles host Hope International on Saturday, January 12, at 7:30 pm inside CU Arena.  Follow live stats/live stream http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/cui.portal#.
