The Concordia Eagles may have struggled in 2012, but they are 2-0 in the New Year and 1-0 in the GSAC after beating Arizona Christian, 83-68, inside Fultz Memorial Gym in Phoenix, AZ on Tuesday, January 8.

Ashley Engeln set career highs for the second-straight game, and was especially dominant on Tuesday.  She scored a career-high 30 points on 12-of-20 shooting and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds.  Not to be outdone, Jade Reed set three career highs in points, 17, rebounds, 13, and free throws made, nine.  Melody Chavez knocked home three threes for 11 points and herself, and Katie Ogdon, each grabbed nine boards.  Concordia dominated the game on the boards and at the line.  The Eagles out-rebounded the Firestorm 62-33 and made 13 more free throws.  Concordia did not shoot overly well, 33%, compared to 41% for ACU.

Chavez opened the game with a three and CU would never trail.  Engeln added a triple at 17:03 to give CU an 11-3 lead.  With the score 11-6, Concordia went on a 13-0 run fueled by two Reed jumpers and six made free throws.  ACU cut it to 11 with 8:45 left, but CU scored six straight on a three from Engeln and three free throws from Amanda Fielder.  Concordia took a comfortable 46-30 lead into the break.

The Firestorm cut the lead to nine four minutes into the second half, but CU went on an 11-2 run over the next five minutes.  The run was led by layup from Engeln and a three from Carly Bishop.  The 18-point lead marked the biggest of the game, but ACU had a couple pushes left.  The Firestorm cut it to nine at 8:02 and Engeln responded with two jumpers to put CU up 67-55.  Chavez followed with a three and Reed made two free throws to put the Eagles up 77-61 with 3:33 left.  CU cruised to the finish line to collect the GSAC win, 83-68.

Concordia won points off turnovers, 16-10, second-chance points, 27-7, and bench points, 36-16.  The Eagles improved to 3-10 and 1-0 in the GSAC.  ACU fell to 4-9 and 0-1 in their first-ever GSAC game and first-ever meeting between the schools.  Concordia hosts Hope International at 5:30 pm on Saturday, January 12 inside CU Arena.  Follow live stats/live stream at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/cui.portal#.
