The #5 Concordia Eagles opened their 2013 season with two wins at NCAA DIII opponent Claremont Mudd Scripps on Saturday afternoon, February 2, in Claremont, CA.

 

2012 GSAC Pitcher of the Year Katie Cotta started game one for CU and went five innings of no-hit ball with six K's to go to 1-0 in the 5-0 win.  Brittani McGue pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits, but no runs.  Shainna Groom had two hits including a triple for an RBI.  Jenna Jorgenson had a double and two RBI.  Cotta gave herself an RBI and Annette Merjano had the other RBI.

Neither team scored till the fourth inning when Groom singled to lead off and was sacrificed to second.  She went to third on a wild pitch and Cotta singled her home.  CU broke it open in the fifth when two walked and were sacrificed a base.  Jorgenson doubled to right center to plate both.  Groom tripled to score them and came around to score on Merjano's groundout. 

Courtney Young started game two and struggled early, allowing three runs and six hits in an inning and a third.  Cotta came in relief and was lights out, allowing no hits with 10 K's to earn her second win on the day in the 6-3 win.

Concordia nailed 15 hits in this game, led by Chanele Dresser who had three singles.  Groom had a double and an RBI.  Caitrin Debaun had two hits, along with Merjano and Jorgenson.

Bryana Simpson singled with one out in the second and came around to score on Emily Craig's single to left center.  CMS scored three in the bottom half thanks to four hits and one CU error.  Jorgenson drove in Hannah Howell to pull within two in the third. 

Craig singled to lead off the fifth, Howell followed with a single, and an error allowed Craig to score.  Debaun doubled to score Howell.  Debaun scored on a wild pitch to put CU up 5-3.  Dresser scored in the seventh on a Groom sac fly to give CU the 6-3 lead.

"It was a great way to start the season," Concordia head coach Crystal Rosenthal said.  "We did a good job executing on the offensive end and Katie Cotta had a nice day on the mound."

Concordia travels to Redding, CA on Friday and Saturday, February 8 and 9, to play in the Simpson University Tournament.
