The newly minted #1 NAIA-ranked Concordia Eagles tested themselves on Tuesday night, March 26, at #8 NCAA Division I UC Santa Barbara in the Thunderdome in Santa Barbara, CA and fell 3-0 in straight sets.

Dillon Auxier had seven kills for CU, hitting .312, and Mark Metrakos was solid in the middle with six winners, hitting .364.  Concordia struggled though, hitting only .075, while the Gauchos hit .349 and out-blocked the Eagles 11-2.

CU fell down 5-3 in the first set, but fought back on a kill from Metrakos to lead 9-8.  UCSB started patching two-point runs together to take an 18-16 lead, as CU could not get rolling.  Three straight from the home team put them up 21-16.  The Eagles closed hard with a kill from Naseri Tumanuvao and UCSB error, getting to 23-21, but two straight Gaucho points ended it.

Concordia came out firing in game two, taking a 6-2 lead on early kills from Brett Anema, Tumanuvao, and Auxier.  Two straight from UCSB closed the gap to 11-9, forcing a CU timeout.  A kill from Auxier, set dump from Kevin Fiske, and two Tumanuvao kills gave CU the 19-14 advantage.  The Eagles let it slip away though, only scoring four of the final 15 points, losing 25-23.

UCSB used the momentum to take a 7-3 lead early in the third set.  A kill from Parker Del Re gave Concordia some life, 14-11.  The home team put the match away though, streaking to a 25-16 win.

The Eagles will take a much deserved break before their next match on Friday, April 12 at home against Penn State University at 7 pm.  It will be the Eagles final home game of the season, last game before they head to the National Invite in Denver, CO, and first visit in school history for the Nittany Lions to the Concordia Campus.  In addition, the 2012 Concordia women's volleyball NAIA National Champions will hold their ring ceremony between the second and third games.
