Concordia University and its Athletic Department are proud to introduce Shawn Patchell as the second head men's volleyball coach in program history.  Patchell will begin immediately and his first season will be in 2014.  He takes over a program that went 25-7 in their first year of existence in 2013 and won an NAIA National Championship with a 3-0 win over Park (MO) on April 20 in Denver, CO.  Previous head coach Trevor Johnson has taken the reigns of Concordia's NAIA National Champion women's volleyball program.

"I am very happy to return to Irvine and am looking forward to providing Christian leadership and continuing the success of Concordia men's volleyball," Shawn Patchell said.  "We will work for continued success as a team with great support from administration, staff, and the student body of Concordia.  Dave Bireline and Trevor Johnson have been great to work with the past month and I look forward to working side-by-side with them to grow the game.  I can't wait to get in the gym and classroom."

Patchell comes from NCAA DIII Marymount University in Arlington, VA, where he has been the head coach since July of 2012.  Prior to Marymount, he was the head coach at NCAA DI powerhouse Brigham Young University in Provo, UT from 2006-2010.  He was an assistant with the Cougars from 2002-2006.  BYU won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2003 and 2004, and were NCAA National Champions in 2004.

"I am so pleased that Concordia University is able to continue its strong reputation in hiring some of the finest volleyball coaches in the nation," Concordia Executive Vice President Gary McDaniel said.  "Most recently, the hiring of Shawn Patchell as the men's volleyball head coach.  His national and international accomplishments underscore his ability to develop young athletes into quality competitors.  Coach Patchell is a strong Christian man with a strong desire to share the gospel message of Jesus Christ.  Concordia men's volleyball is in good hands!"

"This is a great hire for Concordia," former Concordia women's coach and current UC Irvine head women's volleyball coach Paula Weishoff said.  "He is a local product and a fantastic coach.  It's a great situation to come into a program that has already had success.  Shawn will just continue to build on that."

Patchell began his coaching career in 1994 as an assistant coach at Irvine High School, and was the head coach at Laguna Beach High School from 1997-2002.  His boys' team won the Pacific Coast League in 1997 and 1998, and the girls won the conference in 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2001.  Patchell's collegiate coaching career began in 1995 as a graduate assistant at UC Irvine.

Patchell's involvement with USA Volleyball is extensive as well.  He was the head coach of the Men's National Team in the spring of 2012 at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic where they won the gold medal and he was a trainer/consultant at the World League competition in Anaheim.  He worked as an assistant with the Men's National Team in 2011 and 2010.  He was the head coach of the Boy's Junior National Team in 2009 and head coach of the Boy's Youth National Team in 2008, where they took a bronze medal at the NORCECA Zone Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador.

"Coach Patchell will be a fantastic fit with our men's volleyball program," Concordia Athletic Director Dave Bireline said.  "I am thrilled about the direction of both of our volleyball programs and Concordia volleyball as a brand.  Shawn Patchell compliments coach Trevor Johnson on the women's side with their outstanding volleyball tutelage and Christian leadership.  With both programs coming off national championships, this is an exciting time for Concordia volleyball."

A member of BYU's first NCAA men's volleyball team, Patchell was a starter all four years during his tenure in Provo. He went on to play professionally in Spain on the indoor and sand volleyball circuits before returning to the states and beginning his coaching career in 1993.  He has coached club volleyball since 2009.

"I was delighted to see that Shawn Patchell will be back in the men's coaching world as the newly named coach at Concordia," CEO of USA Volleyball Doug Beal said.  "Shawn is certainly among the most accomplished and successful and talented coaches in the country, and I am sure he will help to lead the program at Concordia to new heights.  I congratulate the university on securing someone with Shawn's background and history of success."

Patchell earned his B.A. in English with a minor in business management from BYU in 1993. He went on to earn his master's in English literature from the University of California Irvine in 2000.
