LONG BEACH, CA --- The Eagles used solid finishes in the 200 free and 400 medley relays on the men's and women's sides in day one of the Nike Cup at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool Thursday evening.
The women scored 46 points spread over the two events to enter day two 16th of 19 teams, while the men enter day two at ninth of 12 teams thanks to 98 points in the two events.
The Eagle men edged NCAA Div. I Brigham Young for fourth place in the 200 free relay, as the quartet of Luke Noll, Simon Harling, Mike Perry and Damien Bernard posted an overall time of 1:24.68 thanks to Perry's top split time of 20.79.
The men also finished seventh in the 400 medley relay, out-swimming NAIA powerhouse California Baptist by nearly five seconds with a time of 3:28.71. Joe Krone swam the first leg of the relay and was followed by Bernard, Perry and Noll.
Concordia's women finished 16th in the 200 free with a mark of 1:42.49 with the squad of Allison Grubb, Ashley McClure, Ana Gomez and Tuesday Schellinger, just .32 behind CBU for 15th place in a field featuring 13 NCAA Div. I teams.
The tandem of Gomez, Moore, Becky Vossler and Schellinger finished at 4:07.77 in the 400 medley relay, good for 15th place.
The Nike Cup continues today and goes through Saturday evening.
