LOS ANGELES, CA --- Senior
attacker Kevin Brereton scored a game-high five points, as Concordia
club Lacrosse earned its first-ever win as a program with a 9-5 victory
over Occidental Saturday afternoon.
Brereton netted four goals and dished out one assist to lead the Eagles (1-2) to its first win of the season. The team lost its first two games to Biola and Cal State Fullerton Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
Junior attacker Stewart Fritchle scored twice and dealt one assist for Concordia. Senior middie Joshua Munz, junior middie Stephen Bundy, and freshman defenseman Joseph Campbell each scored once.
Freshman middie Robert Davis and sophomore middie Lex Walker each added one assist. Sophomore goalie G.M. Ciallella racked up an impressive 17 saves and ended the game with a 75 percent save percentage.
Occidental scored an assisted goal in the first three minutes of the game, but the Eagles responded three minutes later to tie the game, when Brereton scored on an assist from Walker on a fast-break play. There were no more goals for the remainder of the quarter.
Fritchle ripped a bounce-shot goal from a Davis assist in the beginning of the second quarter to give Concordia its first lead of the game, but it didn't take long for the Tigers to score two unanswered goals to regain the lead at 3-2 going into halftime.
Occidental scored the first goal of the second half to extend its lead to 4-2, but the Eagles responded with six unanswered goals to open an 8-4 lead with 5:37 left in the game.
Occidental managed to score one more goal, but it was Campbell who sealed the deal with an unassisted goal to give Concordia its first official win with the 9-5 victory.
