IRVINE, CA --- Concordia hung
in the game throughout the first 25 minutes, but a 17-2 rally for the
NAIA's No. 7-ranked Sea Lions put the Eagles in a 16-point deficit from
which they would not recover, as Concordia took a 74-54 loss.
The defeat is Concordia's fourth in a row, including three-straight 20-point losses, dropping the Eagles to 12-12 and 5-11 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
"We just need to find a way to get over the hump here," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "We played hard for the first 30 minutes, but we have to be able to do that for 40 minutes."
"The coaching staff is going to stay positive," Hansen said. "We all
need to keep working and learning. There are still games left, and we
need to focus on those and finish with some wins."
Point Loma Nazarene shot 54 percent (28-for-52) to win its 18th consecutive game and improve to 21-4, 15-2 GSAC.
After heading into halftime trailing by just three points, at 32-29, the Eagles were down by just one point as late as 4:19 into the second half, on a jumper by Karen Carney that made the score 36-35.
The Sea Lions, however, scored 17 points within the next five minutes to gain a 53-37 advantage on a layup from reigning GSAC Player of the Week Amanda Franz with 10:30 left on the clock.
Franz, who ended with a dozen points in the win, was upstaged by All-American Colleen Planeta, who scored 21 points, including a pair of three-pointers. She was on the court for 39 minutes and ended with five blocks and seven rebounds.
Tyler Howard was the high scorer for Concordia, posting 17 points and hitting five treys in the effort. Kayanna Nichols finished with 10 points and five rebounds, as the Eagles shot 37 percent (20-for-54) on the night.
In the first half, Planeta hit field goals on back-to-back possessions, but Howard bookended the shots with a pair of triples to make the score 21-16 with 8:58 left in the half.
Lauren Sahli drained one of five first-half Eagles treys to cut the lead down to three points, at 26-23 with 4:50 to go before Lindsey Kingsland and Nicole Fu hit back-to-back jumpers to shave the lead down to one point, at 28-27 with 2:50 before the break.
Sahli scored eight points and hauled down a team-high six rebounds, while Kingsland's bucket marked her only points on the night.
Concordia ended with 23 turnovers, while Point Loma turned the ball over 19 times.
The Eagles next play Saturday night (Feb. 21) at No. 20 Biola starting at 5:30 p.m. in GSAC play.
