ST. PETERS, MO --- After
standing by on day one, Concordia men's and women's swim teams jumped
into their first day of action Thursday, and are already in the thick
of things, as the men are fifth and the women are seventh out of 17
teams on both sides.
It's the Eagles' second appearance at the NAIA Swimming and Diving Championships, and with two days left in the national meet, the men hold 115 points--just 26 points away from second-place Fresno Pacific, while the women are eight points away from the top-5, with 73 points to show for just one day of competing.
Damien Bernard posted Concordia's best finish of the day, earning automatic All-American honors with a third-place finish in the 200 IM in a time of 1:50.77, which was .67 away from a first-place swim.
Bernard's swim scored 16 points, and it was complimented by a fifth-place showing from Ryan Larson, who scored 14 points with a time of 1:52.41 in the event. Tanner Remai also chipped in five points with a 12th-place finish of 1:53.75 in the race.
The Concordia men also scored points in the 50 free, as Mike Perry led three points-scorers with a seventh-place mark of 21.06. He was followed by Simon Harling, who scored nine points with a ninth-place time of 20.82, and Luke Noll also scored a point in the event, touching out at 21.62--good for 16th.
The men scored substantial points in the two relay events on the day, as a team of Larson, Bernard, Perry and Harling swam a fourth-place time of 1:31.85 in the 200 medley relay.
The performance tallied 30 points for Concordia, which also brought home 28 points with a fifth-place mark of 6:53.75 in the 800 free relay, which was swam by Perry, Larson, Kevin Rice and Remai.
The women finished fifth in the 800 free relay, scoring 28 points with a time of 7:50.38 thanks to solid splits from Ana Gomez, Jessica Cook, Tuesday Schellinger and Katie Moore.
Gomez earned 14 points for the team with a fifth-place touch-out of 2:09.29 in the 200 IM, and Schellinger finished in 10th place with a time of 24.56 in the 50 free to score seven points.
