ST. PETERS, MO --- On its
second day of competition at the 2009 NAIA Swimming and Diving National
Championships, the Concordia men's team moved up a spot, to fourth
place, while the Eagle women held board at seventh place.
Entering the final day of competition, the men stand with 305 points, only three points away from third-place Savannah College of Arts and Design (GA), and only 11 points away from second-place Fresno Pacific.
At seventh place with 135 points, the women's team trails sixth-place Lindenwood (MO) by 25 points.
A blazing swim in the 400 medley relay that landed the men a second-place finish scored 34 points in the day's final event, as a squad of Joe Krone, Damien Bernard, Mike Perry and Luke Noll combined for a time of 3:21.39.
Bernard had also earned his second automatic All-American finish of the meet, turning in a second-place time of 55.51 in the 100 breast, and he anchored a quartet also comprised of Perry, Simon Harling and Noll that swam a time of 1:22.22 in the 200 free--good for third place and 32 team points.
Bernard also found time to squeeze in a fourth-place finish in the 100 fly, touching out at 49.43 to pick up 15 points.
Tanner Remai also swam an All-American mark of 4:01.18 in the 400 IM, which was good for third place and 16 points, as Ryan Larson finished a place behind Remai with a mark of 4:05.15 in the event.
Perry and Nick Bertagna each scored points in the 100 fly with times of 49.90 and 52.19, and the Eagles came up with deep efforts with points-scoring swims in the 100 breast and 100 back to compliment the top-5 swims.
Tim Warnock (58.11) and Jura Mazuran (57.71) scored points in the 100 breast, while Krone and Harling swam times of 51.71 and 52.90, respectively, in the 100 back.
The Concordia women scored 26 points thanks to a 200 free relay team made up of Jessica Cook, Melissa DiGregorio, Ana Gomez and Tuesday Schellinger that touched out at 1:39.69 in sixth place.
Although the women missed out on a chance to score points when the 400 medley relay team was disqualified, but kept pace thanks in part to Katie Moore's sixth-place swim of 4:39.88 in the 400 IM that earned her team 13 points.
Schellinger's time of 1:57.57 in the 200 free was quick enough for eighth place and 11 points, as three others earned points in the individual events.
Moore swam a time of 1:07.98 in the 100 breast, while Cook touched out in a time of 1:01.33 in the 100 back and Gomez swam the 100 fly in a time of 59.99.
