AZUSA, CA --- Playing for a
chance at its second-straight Golden State Athletic Conference
Postseason Tournament championship, the NAIA's No. 11-ranked Eagles
were cut down, 67-45, in the semifinal round by No. 18 Azusa Pacific.
Concordia sees its 12-game winning streak snapped by the loss, which was the largest margin of defeat for the Eagles on the season, as Concordia falls to 26-6 on the year.
Azusa Pacific (23-9) moves on to play Fresno Pacific Tuesday night (March 10) with the GSAC Tournament title on the line.
With an at-large bid all but locked up, the Eagles will remain idle until tipoff at the 2009 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship in Kansas City, Mo., March 18.
The Cougars were led by 17 points from All-GSAC guard Dominique Johnson, who went 5-for-8 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 effort from three-point range.
Cougar guard Marshall Johnson chipped in with a dozen points as Azusa Pacific out-shot Concordia 48 percent (24-for-50) to 28 percent (15-for-23) from the field. The Eagles shot an overall season low, and hit just three shots from beyond the arc, tying a season low.
Marshall Johnson hit a pair of treys in the opening two-plus minutes, as Azusa Pacific took an 8-0 advantage in the early going. All-GSAC guard Terrence Wothy, who scored 11 points for the Eagles, answered with a trey to make it an 8-3 game, but before long, a triple from Dominique Johnson made it a 12-point Azusa Pacific lead at 18-6 with 9:54 left to play in the first half.
The Cougars stretched the lead to as much as 17 points, at 23-6, on a three-pointer by Mike Danielian with 7:55 left to play, as Azusa Paciifc hit all seven of its three-point attempts in the first half.
Concordia went into the locker trailing by the same margin of 17 points, at 37-20.
Things didn't look any prettier for the Eagles in the second half, as Concordia shot just 28 percent (8-for-29), while the Cougars shot just efficiently enough, at 43 percent (9-for-21), to close out the 67-46 victory.
Concordia's 46 points marks the lowest point total for the Eagles since they were ousted from the GSAC Postseason Tournament in a 66-41 loss to Azusa Pacific in 2004. The loss in 2004 served as a turning point in the Eagles' season, as Concordia went on to finish as the NAIA national runner-up.
Worthy and Andre Murillo each finished with 11 points, as Eric Beal and Austin Simon chipped in six and seven points, respectively.
