IRVINE, CA --- After showcasing his outstanding repertoire of a low-90's fastball and devastating slider through two years as an Eagle, Cameron Bayne was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 13th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft Tuesday.
The 403rd player chosen in the draft, Bayne becomes the highest draftee in Concordia history, and is the fifth Eagle selected out of Concordia--including three since 2007.
"Our whole program is very excited for Cameron. He's worked very hard up to this point and he's ready to go out and play, " first-year head coach Mike Grahovac, himself a fourth-round choice in 1989 by the San Francisco Giants, said.
"I talked to Cameron this morning, and he was very pumped up about being selected," Grahovac said. "The White Sox scouts we've talked to have also expressed a lot of excitement about being able to pick him."
Over two years as an Eagle, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Bayne posted an ERA of 4.33 and a win-loss record of 2-6. He also notched four saves and struck out 66 batters in only 68.2 innings of work.
Bayne was the highest selection in the Golden State Athletic Conference, edging Westmont's Timothy Crabbe, who was chosen at No. 419 overall by the Cincinnati Reds.
A native of Honolulu, HI, becomes the first pitcher in Concordia history to be chosen on draft day, and will join 2007 draftee Keoni Ruth as Concordia alumni currently playing for Major League organizations.
Ruth, also a Honolulu native, has split time in 2009 between San Diego Padres affiliates at the High-A and Double-A levels. Click
