MOBILE, AL --- A pair of goals
toward the end of the first half withstood the test from Mobile, as the
NAIA's No. 2-ranked Concordia downed its host by a final
score of 2-1 in non-conference play Friday night.
The Eagles improve to 3-1 and get back on the winning trail following a 4-1 loss to Cal State San Bernardino Tuesday (Sept. 8). Tomorrow, Concordia squares off against the NAIA's No. 3-ranked Notre Dame (OH) starting at 5 p.m., CST.
"The guys were under some pressure, but they did a very good job of responding to it," first-year head coach
Chris Gould said. "They played very good soccer. Mobile had a lot of energy, but the guys did very well. It's a very good team that we play tomorrow. They're going to be prepared, and we just have to match the energy that we know they're going to bring."
After senior midfielder
Jon Fahey broke through with the game's first goal in the 33rd minute, junior forward
Roi Castro tucked away what would prove to be his third golden goal of the season early in the 37th minute to give Concordia a 2-0 lead heading to halftime.
Mobile only took two shots on-goal throughout the game, but cut the lead in half with a goal by Morgan Copes in the 82nd minute, leaving eight minutes for the home team to put pressure on sophomore goalkeeper
James Rammelsberg and the Concordia defense.
Rammelsberg ended with one save, while Mobile keeper Jason Williams turned away five shots in the loss.
Fahey put three of his four shots on-goal, while sophomore forward
Kyle Hollomon and senior forward
Jon Carlson each experienced a near miss in the first half.
Concordia was called offsides nine times, while Mobile was not whistled in the contest.
