IRVINE, CA --- The Eagles posted their fourth shutout in the past six games, and the offense kicked in with a pair of second-half goals, as the NAIA's No. 16 Concordia earned a 2-0 win over Vanguard in a GSAC contest Wednesday afternoon.

Concordia wins its second game in a row, and fifth in its past six overall, as it improves to 8-4, improving its mark in Golden State Athletic Conference play to 4-1.

Vanguard, which had upset the Eagles with an overtime victory in head-to-head competition last year, falls to 5-5-2, including a 2-3-1 record in GSAC competition.

"Today was one of those days where we just got outplayed, and needed two special plays to get the win," head coach Chris Gould said. "Vanguard out-hustled us, and especially in the first half, the game was theirs for the taking. We're lucky to come out with a win."

The Eagles broke through with their first goal of the game in the 62nd minute, when sophomore forward Kyle Hollomon wheeled around and fired from 30 yards out to score his third goal of the season.

Hollomon's goal was then complimented by the third goal of the year from junior midfielder Alex Picarelli, who fought for position on the left-hand side of Vanguard's goal-mouth before lofting a shot just out of Vanguard keeper Trevor Herrera to make the score 2-0 in the 84th minute.

Herrera ended with two saves, while his counterpart, junior goalkeeper Mike Radchuk made one save on the day.

Radchuk's lone save came in the 41st minute, when Vanguard's Scott Faulkner peppered a shot his way. Although Radchuk stopped the initial shot, the carom went right to the foot of a Vanguard striker, would have given the Lions a 1-0 lead had he not been called offside on the play.

The Eagles out-shot the Lions by a tally of 17-9, including 10-4 in the second half.

Concordia next hosts No. 20 Biola as part of a men's and women's GSAC doubleheader this Saturday (Oct. 17), with the men scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m., following the women's game a 12 p.m.
