COSTA MESA, CA --- After 110
minutes of soccer couldn't decide a winner in Tuesday's GSAC Tournament
First Round, the contest went into a penalty shootout, and the NAIA's
No. 8-ranked Vanguard out-shot Concordia 4-2 to advance on a 0-0 tie.
It was the fourth draw in a row for Vanguard (11-1-5), which will now travel to California Baptist to take on the No. 7-ranked Lancers in the GSAC Tournament Semifinals this Friday (Nov. 6).
The loss ends the season for Concordia at 8-5-4, which ends the season on a four-match winless streak.
Down three regular starters due to injury, including sophomore forwards
Siobhan McMorrow and
Rachel Hook, the Eagles played to their second tie of the year against the Lions, as the teams fired off an even seven shots apiece in the game.
Perhaps Concordia's best chance to score came just as the whistle blew in the first half, when senior midfielder
Aubrey Abercrombie fired a shot from 15 yards out that found the net, but not in time to count for a goal.
The call was briefly disputed, but the Eagles carried plenty of momentum into the second half, where each team managed just two shots.
In the penalty shootout, Vanguard hit all four of its shots, while the Eagles hit their first two attempts--by All-GSAC senior defender
Zahira Montanez and sophomore midfielder
Tamara Chagas--but were unable to put the ball on-frame in the next two chances.
The game marks the end of a standout Concordia career for Montanez, as well as fellow All-GSAC selection
Darlene Uriarte and Abercrombie.
Freshman goalkeeper
Bekah Garvin made four saves, while Vanguard keeper Jillian Foss, herself an All-GSAC honoree, turned away three shots on the day.
