IRVINE, CA --- Call it a flair
for the dramatic. Call it clutch. Call it an affinity for 1:24 left on
the clock. Call it what you will, but sophomore driver
Duje Grubisic
scored at that mark in both regulation and overtime, as No. 10
Concordia upset No. 7 UC Irvine, 10-9.
Grubisic's first goal of the game came with just 1:24 left in the game, forcing an already improbable overtime. He then scored the game-winner with 1:24 left in overtime, giving his team the 10-9 win, as Concordia improves to 24-4.
The win also makes the Eagles 8-4 versus teams currently ranked in the Collegiate Water Polo Coaches' Association Top 20 Poll, and is the Eagles' fifth win in the past six games.
"I'm really happy for this group of guys," head coach
Steve Carrera said. "They really met the challenge tonight and played like a team. It was a great crowd and a fun game. This is an amazing win for this program."
In a season filled with great wins and top-notch performances, sophomore driver
Caleb Hamilton set the table for Grubisic's late-game heroics with five goals, as the Eagles picked up their first-ever win against UC Irvine in two tries over the teams' histories.
Senior driver
Jure Belamaric netted a pair of goals, while junior 2-meter
Milos Skaljac scored once in the win.
Freshman goalie
Martin Babovic continued to anchor the defense with 14 saves, seven more than UCI goalie Erik Evered was forced to make.
"The team played great tonight," Carrera said. "We stuck with our game plan and it paid off in the end."
Concordia next hosts NAIA-rival and No. 19-ranked California Baptist this Wednesday (Nov. 11) at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center starting at 7 p.m.
