AZUSA, CA --- A layup from junior center
Lindsey Kingsland gave Concordia a one-point lead with just under a minute to play, but Concordia did not manage a field goal or free throw attempt the rest of the way, as the NAIA's No. 12-ranked Azusa Pacific posted an 81-79 comeback win.
Concordia (8-3, including 1-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference play) led by as much as nine points midway through the second half, but the Cougars scored eight points in a row to make it a 58-59 game just three minutes later en route to improving to 10-3, 3-0 GSAC.
Both teams committed a thrifty 16 fouls on the night, which came in especially handy for APU, who had a foul to give on the Eagles' second-to-last possession of the game, with a one-point lead and 19 seconds to play.
A foul by the Cougars' C.J. Hill put APU one foul away from a CUI bonus, and the Eagles turned the ball over eight seconds later to set up a one-and-one bonus situation for Alex Moore-Porter, who made the first and missed the second with 0.6 seconds left on the clock.
However, the Eagles weren't able to convert their last possession of the game, and extend their losing streak to nine games against Azusa Pacific and 11 consecutive regular season losses at Felix Event Center.
Overall, the Eagles committed 21 turnovers compared to 13 by the Cougars, who made the most of two CUI giveaways in the final minute of the contest.
Midway through the second half, junior guard
Patrice Hunter buried a three-pointer to give CUI a 59-50 advantage, but four Cougars scored a total of eight unanswered points to shave the Eagle lead down to one point, at 59-58, and the teams stayed within five points of each other the remaining 10 minutes.
Hunter ended with nine points on a trio of three-pointers, as the Eagles hit 11 three-pointers on the night. Junior guard
Nicole Fu matched a career-high 21 points, as senior forward
Lauren Sahli netted 12 points and senior guard Kayanna Nichols scored 10 points in the loss.
Azusa Pacific was led by 34 points from Moore-Porter, who nabbed 10 rebounds and went 10-for-14 from the charity stripe. Hill finished with 17 points, seven assists and eight steals.
Concordia next plays at The Master's this Tuesday (Jan. 5), in a GSAC matchup starting at 5:30 p.m. in Santa Clarita.
