IRVINE, CA --- With a trio of road GSAC losses leading into tonight's home game, Concordia returned the favor on another GSAC foe, as junior forward
Karen Carney notched a double-double to help the Eagles down California Baptist by a score of 84-74.
Carney's 18 points was matched by junior guard
Nicole Fu, as the former went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe and ended with a game-high 10 boards to help CUI improve to 9-4, including 2-3 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
California Baptist was out-rebounded 42-26 on the night and falls to 10-5, 3-2 GSAC, with the loss.
"CBU is a really good defensive team and they gave us a lot of trouble, but our girls stepped it up and found ways to score," head coach
Jenny Hansen said. "I think the difference in the game was how we picked up our rebounding game. We had focussed all week at practice on boxing out, and I saw a huge difference tonight."
The game started on an off-note for the Eagles, who were hit with an administrative technical foul for reporting their starting lineups prior to 10 minutes before tipoff. As a result, CBU held a 2-0 advantage before the tipoff on a couple of made free throws by Brenna Hahn.
Senior guard
Kayanna Nichols--who ended the night with 17 points--scored 10 points in the first six minutes of the game, as the Eagles streaked out to leads of 13-6 and 17-10 in the opening 10 minutes.
By halftime, the Eagles had gained a 20-11 advantage on the battle of the boards, and benefited from a 14 percent (1-for-7) Lancer shooting effort from beyond the arc to take a 33-30 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, CUI yielded the lead for all of 45 seconds, but Carney was there to score a pair of buckets and wrestle the advantage back to the Eagles at 37-34 with 17:13 to play.
"Karen was so huge for us tonight," Hansen said. "She can have such a big impact on a game against anyone because she so versatile and such a powerful athlete."
The Eagles--who out-scored the Lancers 12-0 from the bench in the second half--hadn't pushed the lead to more than six during the whole second half until a fastbreak layup by junior guard
Tyler Howard made the score 63-55 with 7:17 to play.
CUI picked up its largest lead, at 13 points, twice in the final 16 seconds when Fu and Carney each hit both free throws to put the win on ice.
"We shot the ball really well, which is always going to help your cause, and especially against a good team," Hansen said. "We got down to the final five seconds of the shot clock a lot of times, and we just had players step up and make big plays. I'm really proud of the way this team came back after a tough win on the road [at The Master's] earlier this week."
Junior guard
Patrice Hunter finished with 13 points and three buckets from beyond the arc, while junior forward
Cheyenne Wallace hauled down nine boards and posted three blocks in the win.
CBU was led by Hahn's 18 points and had 16 points from Heather Couzens, 14 points from Monique Calvello and 12 points from Megan Bradford.
The Eagles next host the NAIA's No. 3-ranked (and GSAC leading) Point Loma Nazarene this Tuesday (Jan. 12), starting at 5:30 p.m. at CU Arena.
