EL CAJON, CA --- It would have been unreasonable to expect the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Concordia to post a perfect season in 2009-10, but Tuesday night's 80-75 loss at San Diego Christian wasn't quite what the Eagles had in mind either.
The Eagles were out-shot 61 (27-for-44) to 44 (28-for-63) percent in their first loss of the year, as they fall to 19-1, including 9-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
The win marks just the third on the conference season for San Diego Christian (5-15, 3-7 GSAC), which has now knocked off two top-10 teams in conference play, after beating defending GSAC champion and then-No. 7 Fresno Pacific 82-79 at home Jan. 16.
It's the first time the Hawks have downed the Eagles since the 2005-06 season--a stretch of six games--when San Diego Christian finished second in the GSAC, ranked No. 14 in the NAIA, and advanced to the NAIA National Championships First Round.
The Eagles were led by 21 points from junior guard
Justin Johnson, who came just two rebounds shy of notching his second career double-double in as many games.
In what was shaping up to be the sequel to Saturday night's come-from-behind 63-61 win over Fresno Pacific, Concordia shaved a nine-point Hawks lead down to just three points, at 76-73, within the space of a minute thanks to treys from Gasporra and Worthy.
Trailing by the 76-73 margin with 38 seconds to play, the Eagles got even closer, at two points, when Worthy hit both of his free-throw attempts with 20 seconds left, but SDC's Ahmed Abdelhamid and Jack Colston combined to hit the team's final three free-throw attempts to ice the game.
Tyler Mutton led the way for the Hawks with 23 points on four treys, while James Green went a perfect 8-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, to finish with 18 points.
The Eagles next host the Azusa Pacific this coming Saturday (Jan. 30) in GSAC action starting at 7:30 p.m.
