IRVINE, CA --- For the second time in as many meetings this season, Concordia held a slim lead late in the game against Azusa Pacific tonight, but for the second time in as many meetings, the NAIA's No. 11-ranked Cougars pulled off a win, this time by a 68-64 tally.
Concordia led by three points, at 64-61 with 1:19 to play, but were out-scored 7-0 to finish the contest, as the Eagles drop to 10-9, including 3-8 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
Azusa Pacific picked up 30 points from Alex Moore-Porter, including five of her team's final seven points, as the Cougars improve to 17-4, 10-1 GSAC.
The Eagles were led by 20 points from junior guard
Nicole Fu, while senior guard
Kayanna Nichols and senior forward
Karen Carney posted 13 and 10 points, respectively, in the losing effort.
CUI had trailed by as much as 11 points in the second half, and were down by nine points following a jumper by Kristine Hala'ufia just after the 10-minute mark. The Eagles then embarked on a 7-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Carney--just her third on the season--to make the score 53-51 with 7:55 to play.
Although APU didn't surrender the lead until just under two minutes to go, the Cougars gained no more than a three-point lead for a 7:50 stretch, which was only broken up by a free-throw by C.J. Hill with five seconds left in the game.
Junior forward
Cheyenne Wallace notched a game-high four blocks for the Eagles, who tallied eight stuffs as a team, and she also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Aside from Moore-Porter's 30 points, the Cougras picked up 17 points and nine boards from Hala'ufia and eight points, six assists from Hill.
The Eagles are next in action this Tuesday (Feb. 2) against Hope International, starting at 5:30 p.m. in Fullerton.
