LA JOLLA, CA --- Although the Eagles dropped three of the top-four singles showdowns, a 3-0 sweep of doubles play powered Concordia to a 6-3 win over NCAA Div. II UC San Diego, as the Eagles notched their third consecutive win against the Tritons.
Picked to finish second in the Golden State Athletic Conference, the Eagles start the season at 1-0.
The Eagles entered singles play with the 3-0 lead, and ended up splitting singles action, with All-American junior Andrey Potapkin holding down the No. 2 spot with a win over Chapman Chan by scores of 6-1, 6-2.
Sophomore Ryan McNamara and freshman Jan Guler both earned wins from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. McNamara won by scores of 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, while Guler earned his win with scores of 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomore Bruno Santarelli was downed by a tie-break score of 11-9 in the third set after earning a 7-6 win in the second set to avoid a sweep in the No. 4 position.
NAIA All-American second-team senior Augusto Elias and All-American honorable mention junior Kareem Berdai were both downed in singles action by identical scores of 6-4, 6-1.
Potapkin and Santarelli combined for an 8-4 win from the top spot in doubles, and the tandems of Elias-Berdai and McNamara-Guler won by scores of 8-5 and 8-6, respectively.
The Eagles are in action again this Saturday (Feb. 6) against University of Redlands, starting at 2 p.m. at Racquet Club of Irvine.
