IRVINE, CA --- Senior left-handed pitcher
Bennett Whitmore turned in his best outing to date in an early season chalked full of his outstanding performances, and the Eagles got their bats going in an 11-0 drubbing of NCAA Div. II Cal State Dominguez Hills in non-conference play Monday.
Whitmore needed just 102 pitches to throw a three-hit shutout in his first complete game of the season. He issued four walks and struck out six on the day, and fanned the side in the ninth to improve to 3-0, as Concordia improves to 3-1 on the young campaign.
Cal State Dominguez Hills managed only three hits, including just one hit through the first seven frames, committed three errors and used seven pitchers to fall to 1-2.
"Bennett was outstanding, and so was as our defense," head coach
Mike Grahovac said. "Our offense was on today, and we were able to put pressure on the opposing defense. It was a great team win."
Senior centerfielder
Pete Lemone finished the dway with a 3-for-5 effort, doubled, knocked in two RBI and scored a run and junior left-fielder
Matt Ivanoff had a two-hit day to power the offense from the top two spots in the order.
Junior third-baseman
Danny Casey, the No. 3 hitter in the lineup, knocked in a pair of runs on the day as well as junior designated hitter
Justin Mishalow and junior second-baseman
Sean Costella, the No. 8 and 9 hitters, respectively.
Junior right-fielder
Ryan Sheeks had the painful honor of reaching first base three consecutive times via the bean-ball and also reached base on an error in his first at-bat.
The Eagles picked up single runs in the second and third innings, but then exploded for nine runs over the seventh and eighth innings.
Sheeks took one for the team to get the Eagles going to lead off the seventh, and moved up on a wild pitch before advancing to third on a single by junior shortstop
Robbie Knowles. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Mishalow, and Costella knocked in Knowles with a single to centerfield to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Costella ended up scoring on a double by Lemone, who came around to score on a two-out single by Casey that gave Whitmore a 6-0 cushion heading to the eighth.
The first six batters of the CUI eighth inning reached base, keyed by a leadoff double by junior catcher
John Hill, as the Eagles added five runs to their lead in their final at-bat.
Lemone singled with the bases loaded and two runs in, driving in Knowles, and everybody moved up a base on the Toros' third miscue of the ballgame. Pinch hitter
Kyle Konicek knocked in the game's final run on an RBI groundout.
Whitmore allowed only one runner to get past first base, a leadoff walk in the ninth, and set down the side in order five times.
Bret Montgomery (0-1) took the loss for the Toros after surrendering two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk versus two strikeouts in three innings of work.
The Eagles next host Academy of Arts this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 12-13) in non-conference tilts starting at 2 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively, at Eagle Field.
