SAN DIEGO, CA --- The NAIA's No. 3-ranked Concordia used a trio of three-pointers from three difference sources to put together a 9-0 rally and take control of the lead seven minutes into the second half, as the Eagles downed Point Loma Nazarene by a score of 77-68.
The Eagles hit eight treys on the night, including four from sophomore forward
Cameron Gliddon, who posted 16 points along with junior guard
Justin Johnson.
Concordia wins its fifth in a row to improve to 24-2, including 14-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, and next takes on No. 4 Biola, which was upset tonight by Westmont to give the Eagles a grasp on first place in the conference.
Point Loma Nazarene falls to 8-17, including 5-12 in GSAC play.
"I told the guys before the game that it was going to a be difficult, challenging game, and it was," head coach
Ken Ammann. "Point Loma makes you earn every play, so if you're not hitting your shots and executing, they'll make you pay. We were fortunate to be able to cut the lead to six points at the half, and that carried over to the second half, when we started hitting our shots."
"This was a game that we had to win, so I'm glad that we found a way."
Concordia was down by 13 points, at 32-19, with just 2:10 left in the first half, but ended the half on an 8-1 rally to trail by a score of 33-27 heading into the locker room.
Junior guard
A.J. Gasporra, who scored seven points off the bench, hit a layup to start the rally, and sophomore guard
Karlos Grier and Gliddon hit a three-pointer apiece to fuel a run that set the table for the comeback effort in the second half.
Gliddon buried a three-pointer to give Concordia a momentary lead, at 42-41, early in the second half, but the Sea Lions regained the advantage just 34 seconds later.
Trailing, 46-42, Gasporra hit the first of three-straight Concordia treys, as Johnson and Grier also scored from long distance to take the lead for good, at 51-46 with 12:33 to play.
Although Point Loma would shave the Concordia lead down to two points (61-59) with 5:16 on the clock, Johnson and junior forward
Brandon Hucks scored back-to-back layups to stretch the cushion to 65-59 with 3:45 to go.
The lead was then trimmed to three points on a jumper by Rhett Beal with 49 seconds to go, but Johnson went 4-for-4, and Gliddon went 2-for-2 from the line in the final minute to ice the game at 77-68.
Beal ended with 13 points, while James Hancock netted a game-high 17 points for the Sea Lions.
Concordia and Biola tip off at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday (Feb. 20) in the 2010 Homecoming Game at CU Arena.
