IRVINE, CA --- Coming off a two-win week that included a 70-61 win over the NAIA's then-No. 4 Biola at Homecoming Saturday night, Concordia moved up one spot in the weekly NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, to No. 2, while junior guard
Justin Johnson earned GSAC Player of the Week honors.
The Eagles have now won six in a row after going 19-0 to start the campaign, and at 15-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, sit atop the conference with a two-game lead over Biola, which fell to No. 6 in today's voting.
With just three games left to play on the conference slate, Concordia is closing in on its third GSAC title in program history. It would be the third conference title in the past four years for the Eagles.
At 25-2, Concordia is just three victories away from matching last season's mark of 28 wins, when the Eagles advanced to the NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals.
In two wins last week, Johnson, the third-leading scorer in the GSAC with 17.2 points per game, scored 37 points thanks to a 12-for-22 (55 percent) effort from the field. He also grabbed seven rebounds, dealt out six assists and forced three steals on the week.
In the 70-61 victory over Biola, Johnson scored 21 points and hauled down five boards while going 6-for-8 from the free-throw line.
It is the second GSAC Player of the Week honor for Johnson, who is responsible for two incredible game-winning shots this season.
His first game-winner gave Concordia a 63-61 victory over defending GSAC Champion Fresno Pacific Jan. 23 when he banked a running layup at the last second, and his second came last Saturday (Feb. 13) on a half-court heave to down California Baptist, 68-65, in Riverside.
