LAGUNA HILLS, CA --- A day after dropping a hard-fought 6-3 match to the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Fresno Pacific yesterday, the No. 3-ranked Eagles came back Tuesday with a 6-3 victory against No. 6 Vanguard, marking the first time Concordia has downed its nearby rival.
Concordia ends the two-day stint at 4-1 overall, including 3-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
"I'm very proud of the way our teams responded to their close losses at Fresno," head coach John Norton said. "The teams played long matches in Fresno, they were on the road for five hours last night, they got little sleep and they came to the courts ready to compete today."
Concordia's Bettina Radke came back after a 7-6, 5-7, 10-8 loss yesterday to post a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Vanguard's Betyel Tesfa today in CUI's only win in the top three spots of singles.
Although they went just 1-2 in the top-three positions of singles, the Eagles swept positions four-through-six and took two out of three in doubles to secure the win.
"Our tennis teams are made up of a very tough group of student-athletes," Norton said. "I was impressed by their strength of mind and body today."
The Eagles are next in action this Saturday (Feb. 27) against Hope International, starting at noon on the campus of Concordia University.
