IRVINE, CA --- Freshman right-hander
Ryan Goodbrand took a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning and was touched up for only one run over his outing, but a rough patch of three errors on two eighth-inning Lancer bunts cost the Eagles three unearned runs in a 5-2 loss to California Baptist.
Goodbrand, in his first career outing in Golden State Athletic Conference play, scattered three hits over seven innings but left a 1-1 game heading into the two final frames.
Concordia's three errors led to four runs--three unearned--in the eighth, as the Eagles fall to 7-5, including 0-3 in GSAC play. California Baptist ends the day at 15-5, 3-0 GSAC.
The tough-luck loss went to senior righty
Jeff Allen, who allowed just two balls past the infield but retired just one of six batters faced to start the eighth.
CBU's ninth-place hitter, Matt Johnson, bunted aboard to lead off the frame, and he scored all the way from first when leadoff hitter Garrett Rau's sacrifice bunt was misplayed, then thrown away, allowing Rau to get to second.
The next player in the Lancer lineup reached on an attempted sacrifice as well, when the throw from junior third baseman
Danny Casey was in time to make an out, but was caught well behind the bag at first.
CBU then plated its next two runs on a double down the line from Cole Bullard, making it a 4-1 game, and Jake Johnson followed with a one-out single to plate Bullard and put the Eagles in a 5-1 deficit with just six outs to come back.
Casey singled to lead off the eighth, stole second and scored on a single by junior catcher
John Hill, whose solo homer in the second had given CUI the early lead at 1-0.
Leading up to its game-winning rally in the eighth, CBU had tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh when Jake Johnson and All-GSAC catcher Sharif Othman hit back-to-back doubles to give Goodbrand the only trouble of his outing.
Goodbrand retired the side in order in four innings, including three 1-2-3 frames in a row from the second through the fourth.
CBU lefty Jesse Arreola (2-0) came on with two runners in scoring position in the fifth and went 3.1 innings to pick up the win in relief. He then handed the ball to Zach Hedges, who fell behind, 3-0, to all three batters in the ninth, but pitched a perfect frame to pick up his third save of the year.
The two teams finish their four-game series this Monday (March 1), starting at 2 p.m. at Eagle Field on the campus of Concordia University.
