IRVINE, CA --- When Concordia and San Diego Christian met Jan. 26 in El Cajon, the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Eagles were a team out to a 19-0 start who were then shocked by their first loss of the year. Playing as the GSAC champs tonight, Concordia was in championship form, posting an 89-57 win.
The victory over the Hawks not only avenges the Jan. 26 upset, but closes out the Eagles' regular season at 28-2, including 18-2 in GSAC tilts.
The 18-2 mark ties a school record, set in 2003-04, for the best regular season in school history, and Concordia's 28th win of the year matches its win total for each of the previous two seasons.
San Diego Christian's outside chance of making the GSAC Tournament First Round is squelched by their loss, as the Hawks end their season at 7-23, 5-15 GSAC.
Sophomore center
Andre Murillo scored a game-high 19 points, hauled down six rebounds, and also received a rousing ovation from the CU Arena faithful each time he came in and out of the game.
Murillo's tough play on the inside powered the Eagles to a 38-24 advantage in the paint, but the biggest advantage for CUI was where it has been all year--on turnovers.
Coming into the game with a +7.9 turnover margin, the Eagles forced 27 Hawk turnovers and made just seven of their own, out-scoring San Diego Christian, 41-5 on points off turnovers.
Senior guard
Terrence Worthy hit four three-pointers on just six attempts, dealt out four assists and forced five steals in a 16-point showing, while junior guard
A.J. Gasporra accounted for 13 points and three treys in the win.
Senior forward
Dominic Cruz-Duncan scored 10 points and hauled down five rebounds on the night.
The Eagles, who have already locked up an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in Kansas City, Mo., March 17-23, will next host Point Loma Nazarene in the GSAC Playoffs First Round this Thursday (March 4), starting at 7:30 p.m. at CU Arena.
The winner advances to Semifinal action Saturday night (March 6) at Biola.
The All-GSAC Teams are scheduled to be announced tomorrow (Tuesday, March 2).
