IRVINE, CA --- Junior third baseman
Danny Casey knocked three hits on the day and scored three runs, and senior right fielder
Beau Poteet made a couple of outstanding plays in the nightcap, but Concordia lost both ends of a twin bill to the NAIA's No. 9 Fresno Pacific by scores of 9-3 and 11-3.
The Eagles were out-hit 22-11 on the day, and fall to 8-7, including 1-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, while the Sunbirds end the day at 11-1, 3-1 GSAC.
Fresno Pacific first baseman Case Rigby, an All-GSAC selection in 2009, was a terror to Concordia in both ends of the doubleheader, going 5-for-7 with a homer and three doubles, despite the fact that he was intentionally walked three times on the day.
Rigby launched a two-run shot in the first inning of game one, and the Sunbirds held a 4-1 lead heading into the fifth inning, where they put up five runs to stretch the lead to 9-1.
Sunbird DH Jeff Taylor tripled in two runs and scored in the five-run rally, which was all charged to Concordia senior left-hander
Bennett Whitmore, who took the loss and falls to 4-1.
All-GSAC right-hander Kelyn Schellenberg allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits and did not walk a batter in a complete-game effort, where he notched three strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the campaign.
In game two, Concordia held a 2-1 lead after Casey walked and scored on a double from senior first baseman
Chris Lum in the fourth. Fresno Pacific struck back with a three-run frame in the fifth, where the big hit was a two-run single by center fielder Tyler Pryor, giving the Sunbirds a 4-2 lead.
Fresno Pacific then tacked on three runs, including two unearned runs, in the sixth inning, making the score 7-2 heading into the seventh. The Sunbirds then scored four runs in the top of the eighth before CUI scored a run in the ninth to make the final score 9-3.
Poteet gunned down a runner at the plate in the second inning, then robbed a would-be home run by Pryor with a leaping grab in the third.
Concordia freshman right-hander
Sam Lindsey took the loss and falls to 1-1. He went 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. He fanned three batters and issued three walks in the outing.
FPU's David Hawes (3-0) picked up the win. In 7.1 innings of work, he scattered four hits and issued three walks while striking out eight and allowing two runs (one earned).
The Eagles and Sunbirds finish their four-game series this Friday (March 5) with a GSAC doubleheader in Fresno starting at 11 a.m.
