IRVINE, CA --- Three-time All-GSAC senior
Terrence Worthy posted a career-high 29 points in his final home game as an Eagle, scoring off his own steal in the final seconds, as the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Concordia downed Point Loma Nazarene, 74-69, in the GSAC Tournament.
The First Round win means that the Eagles advance to the Semifinal Round this Saturday (March 6) against No. 23 Fresno Pacific, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Biola's Chase Gymnasium.
Point Loma ends its season with a record of 8-21.
Worthy, the career leader with 255 steals, tallied seven thefts on the night, and his final steal came with just two seconds left on the clock and the Sea Lions in position to tie the game with a trey.
"That was such a fitting way for Terrence to end his career at home--with a steal," GSAC Coach of the Year
Ken Ammann said. "I've watched him make such great plays night after night over the past four years. I'm really going to miss watching Terrence play next year."
Worthy went 9-for-9 from the free-throw line and was part of a 26-for-28 (93 percent) effort from the charity stripe. The Sea Lions, in contrast, hit 69 percent (18-for-26) on free-throw opportunities.
Point Loma held a 30-28 lead at the half, and led as late as 32 minutes into the contest, at 49-48 on a 1-for-2 charity stripe showing from James Hancock.
With 2:50 left, GSAC Player of the Year
Justin Johnson converted his second consecutive three-point play to make the score 66-59, but the Sea Lions caught up in a hurry and came to within two points, at 66-64 on a layup from Todd Campbell with 1:30 remaining.
"Point Loma is so hard to kill," Ammann said. "You've got to give them credit for the way they played tonight. They're going to be a really tough team next year."
Overall, the two teams combined for 45 fouls, and one player from each team fouled out while five players ended with four fouls.
The Eagles, who held the NAIA's top turnover margin at +8.3 coming into the game, forced 18 turnovers and committed just seven, while coming up with 14 steals.
Johnson ended with 16 points, including 14 in the second half, while junior forward
Brandon Hucks scored eight points and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Concordia puts its 29-2 record on the line Saturday night against Fresno Pacific, the 2009 GSAC champion, in hopes of capturing the GSAC Tournament title to secure the No. 1 seed at the NAIA National Championships March 17-23 in Kansas City, Mo.
