IRVINE, CA --- Senior catcher
Melanie Hansen homered twice, including one of two grand slams, in the Eagles' thrashing of Cornerstone (MI) to complete a non-conference doubleheader sweep, as the NAIA's No. 11 Concordia posted wins of 14-4 and 20-0 Saturday afternoon.
Hansen's first homer in the contest was a three-run shot, and freshman third baseman
Shainna Groom also went yard with the bases juiced and drove in six runs in the nightcap, as Concordia improves to 12-6.
Cornerstone (0-6) held a 3-2 lead in the middle of the third in the opener, but Concordia broke the game open with a six-run bottom of the third, thanks in part to a two-run shot by sophomore shortstop
Alyssa Erickson to turn the tide in favor of the Eagles.
Overall, Concordia hit seven homers. Junior catcher
Carly Smith hit two homers and ended with seven RBI, while NAIA All-American sophomore first baseman
Katie Carson hit her first homer of the season in the opener.
Carson ended the day with four hits and four runs scored, along with three RBI.
Freshman right-hander
Courtney Young picked up the win in the opener to improve to 2-1. She went five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks against seven strikeouts.
Sophomore righty
Jennifer Simons (5-2) went four shutout innings in the second game, allowing just two hits and not issuing a walk while fanning five batters before she gave way to junior right-hander
Kristen Schlegel, who pitched a scoreless fifth.
The Eagles next host Bethany this coming Monday (March 8) in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. at Eagle Field.
