IRVINE, CA --- Sophomore right-hander Jennifer Simons carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of game one and picked up a win in the pitchers' duel, and the NAIA's No. 11 Concordia offense came to life in the second end of a 2-0, 14-0 sweep of Bethany in non-conference play Monday.

Simons pitched a two-hit shutout, fanning five and walking one in seven innings to secure the win and improve to 6-2.

The Eagles improve to 13-6 and win their fifth in a row, while Bethany falls to 1-10 with the twin bill sweep.

Bethany committed four errors in each game, leading to a total of six unearned runs, including both Concordia scores in the opener.

Concordia scored its first run of the opener in the second inning, where sophomore second baseman Lizette Fernandez doubled and her pinch-runner, Samantha Perez, scored when sophomore shortstop Alyssa Erickson hit an infield single that was then thrown away.

In the fourth inning, junior catcher Carly Smith singled, and her pinch-runner, Bryanna Simpson, eventually came around to score on a ball that Erickson hit that led to another throwing error by the Bethany infield, making it a 2-0 game.

Simons allowed her first hit with two out in the sixth on an infield single, then allowed a base hit up the middle with one out in the seventh to account for two of her three baserunners allowed.

In the nightcap, the Eagles hit five doubles, including two by senior catcher Melanie Hansen, and NAIA All-American sophomore first baseman Katie Carson went 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

Perez had three hits and scored three runs in game two, and she got the offense started in the second inning with a leadoff bunt single that would eventually lead to three runs.

Perez was on third base with two outs and sophomore left fielder Ashlee Leon at first when head coach Crystal Rosenthal called a double-steal that plated Perez and moved Leon to third base with Carson at the plate.

Carson then knocked in Leon with a double and scored on an infield single by senior center fielder Shannon Walton that gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Hansen and Perez hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the third, and the Eagles scored a run each on on singles by Erickson, Carson and a groundout by Walton as part of a four-run frame to make it a 7-0 ballgame heading to the fourth.

The Eagles scored seven runs (three unearned) on seven hits and two errors in the bottom of the fourth to secure the win at 14-0.

Freshman right-hander Courtney Young picked up the game-two victory and improves to 3-1. She went four scoreless innings, striking out six batters and scattering three hits.

Concordia next plays at Vanguard tomorrow afternoon (March 9) in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader, starting at 1:30 p.m.
