COSTA MESA, CA --- A three-run triple from NAIA All-American Katie Carson in the sixth inning complimented a two-run single by freshman third baseman Shainna Groom in the second, as the NAIA's No. 11 Concordia split a GSAC doubleheader at Vanguard by scores of 1-0 and 7-5.

The Eagles end the day at 15-7, including 2-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, while Vanguard closes out the twin bill with a mark of 11-9, 1-3 GSAC.

Carson's bases-loaded three-bagger broke a 3-3 tie, and she later scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles and starting left-hander Morgan Reiter a 7-3 advantage with Vanguard coming to bat in the bottom of the sixth.

The four-run sixth was enough to hold off Vanguard's two-run rally in the bottom of the frame, when sophomore righty Jennifer Simons allowed a pair of unearned runs after having entered with two out and a runner on second in the fifth.

Groom had singled in two runs in a three-run rally in the top of the second, which Vanguard answered with three runs (two of which scored as a result of illegal pitches) in the bottom of the frame.

Simons picks up the win and improves to 7-2 with 2.1 innings where she allowed two unearned runs on five hits and a walk. She struck out three batters in the outing.

Vanguard starter Katharine Jablonski (4-3) took the loss in game two. She surrendered Carson's triple among four hits and four earned runs, two walks and one strikeout in 4.1 innings of relief.

Senior right-hander Rachel Reekstin was hit with the loss in game one, falling to 2-3 on the year. In five innings, she allowed just one earned run on six hits and two walks while fanning three batters.

The Lions scored the game's lone run in the third inning, when Kari Bergerson reached on a fielder's choice bunt, stole second and scored on a single by April Glenn that was mishandled in the outfield.

Vanguard starting left-hander Melissa Forrester (4-2) earned the win in the opener, going 5.1 shutout innings, where she scattered four hits and a walk but did not register a strikeout.

The Eagles next host Concordia-Illinois in a non-conference doubleheader this Friday (March 12), starting at 1:30 p.m. at Eagle Field.
