SAN DIEGO, CA --- Needing a win over No. 7 Point Loma Nazarene to stay in the GSAC Tournament, the NAIA's No. 8-ranked Concordia ran into a pair of buzz-saws named Hannah Faria and Jessica Tieszen, as the Eagles were eliminated from the tournament with an 8-0 loss.
Concordia is now 41-18, and has a lock on an at-large bid for the NAIA Softball National Championships in Decatur, Ala., May 20-26. The field and seedings for the tournament will be announced early next week.
Point Loma Nazarene (28-12) moves on to play the NAIA's top-ranked and defending champion California Baptist tomorrow (Thursday, May 6) in a best 2-of-3 championship series, starting at 4 p.m. at John C. Funk Stadium in Riverside.
In today's contest, Faria pitched five shutout innings, scattered four hits and issued one walk to pick up the win and improve to 11-5. She was picked up at the plate by a standout day from Tieszen, who finished a double shy of the cycle and scored three runs.
Tieszen singled and scored on a two-run double by Jill Shaefer in a three-run first, and she launched a two-run homer in the second to make it a 5-0 ballgame heading to the third.
She then tripled to start a three-run rally in the fifth as Point Loma Nazarene closed out the win in five innings thanks to the eight-run mercy rule.
Freshman left-hander
Morgan Rieter (9-3) took the loss after allowing eight earned runs on nine hits and two walks in four-plus innings. Sophomore righty
Jennifer Simons, who threw 13.1 innings in a loss yesterday, came in to try and limit the damage in the fifth.
The Eagles knocked four singles on the day, but did not reach third base, and stranded six runners in the loss.
