MOBILE, AL --- Concordia held a 2-1 lead heading into singles play, where the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Eagles split with No. 5 Vanguard to pull out a 5-4 lead and advance to the semifinal round of the NAIA National Championships at Mobile Tennis Center.
The win propels Concordia to its second consecutive semifinals appearance at the national tourney and improves the Eagles to a program-best 20-3 overall. Concordia's next opponent is the NAIA's top-ranked and six-time defending champion Auburn-Montgomery, which eliminated the Eagles in last year's semifinal round.
"The women were tough, as always, today," head coach
John Norton said. "
Bettina Radke and
Jordan Kimura fought to save the match, and it all came down to Jordan's third-set victory. She lost the first set, but kept great focus and refused to give up."
Kimura, an All-GSAC honoree, improved her undefeated record to 22-0 on the season, and no win proved more crucial than today's 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Vanguard's Kateryna Malakhova that clinched the win for the Eagles.
Kimura and doubles partner
Kristin Yep took the only loss in doubles competition, but both came through with a victory in singles action, with Yep earning a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 5.
Radke, also an All-GSAC selection, picked up a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win in singles after teaming up with fellow All-GSAC
Jennifer Sher for an 8-5 win at the top spot of doubles action.
Concordia and Auburn-Montgomery will square off Friday morning (May 21) at 7 a.m. (PST).
