MOBILE, AL --- For the second consecutive year, Concordia met with Auburn Montgomery (AL) in the NAIA National Championship Semifinals, and for the second consecutive year, the Eagles fell by a 5-0 tally, marking the end of Concordia's most successful season to date.
The Eagles wrap up the year at 20-4, while Auburn Montgomery moves on to the finals, where it seeks its seventh-straight national title.
"The Concordia ladies showed how much they have improved in just a year by battling closely with last year's champs today," head coach
John Norton said. "Even though we lost 5-0, the doubles matches and all the games were very tight. It was a great battle out there today."
Kristin Yep and All-GSAC honoree
Jordan Kimura played to the closest margin of doubles play, eventually falling by an 8-5 tally at No. 2. The other two positions of doubles action dropped their matches by identical scores of 8-2.
Needing only two wins in singles to clinch its berth to the final round, Auburn Montgomery pulled out victories at No. 4 and 5, downing Yep and
Johanna Sceresini by scores of 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.
Concordia's 20 wins mark the highest win total since the program was reinstated in 2006, and four wins is the fewest total in that timeframe as well.
Auburn Montgomery will need to play through GSAC foe Fresno Pacific to win the national title, after the Sunbirds downed Point Loma Nazarene in semifinal play Friday. The finals matchup is the fifth consecutive paring, with Auburn Montgomery getting the best of Fresno Pacific each time.
