IRVINE, CA --- Concordia alumnus
Bennett Whitmore, who was selected in the 24th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Seattle Mariners last week, signed a contract with the organization and will report to its rookie ball affiliate in Pulaski, Virginia, he announced Tuesday.
Whitmore became the fifth player in school history to get drafted following his senior year as an Eagle, where he posted 98 strikeouts in 101.1 innings and recorded a 3.55 ERA along with a mark of 8-5 in 15 starts.
It was the third year in a row that Whitmore was selected in the draft, following standout seasons at Pac-10 member University of Oregon and Fresno City College, where he was named the 2008 Northern California Pitcher of the Year.
In his only season donning an Eagles jersey, Whitmore became the first player in school history to garner NAIA Baseball Pitcher of the Week accolades March 16 following a standout performance against the NAIA's then-No. 2 Point Loma Nazarene during the previous week, where he brought a no-hitter into the seventh inning.
The 2010 Eagles finished 27-24 and returned to the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament after missing the tourney in 2009.
