IRVINE, CA --- In what the Concordia assistant coaches hope to be a prelude to a successful 2010 Eagle soccer season,
Cheyne Gordon and
Sabrina Stracke combined to guide a group of 12-13 year-old girls to an undefeated U.S. Olympic Development Program camp July 11-16.
In addition to their coaching duties at Concordia, Gordon and Stracke currently serve as coaches for Cal-South, which went 3-0 against opponents at the Region IV camp that included top soccer players from each respective region.
At the camp, Cal-South downed Cal-North and an invitational team by scores of 5-0 and 5-1, respectively, then edged the group from Washington by a 2-1 margin.
As a result, 15 of the 18 players on Cal-South advanced to a pool of just 40 players that will get a look from U.S. soccer coaches from across the country. The pool of 40 was whittled down from 256 at the start of camp, comprised of players from 13 western states, including Hawaii and Alaska.
Concordia women's soccer begins its 2010 schedule Aug. 20 at Concordia-Oregon, which finished the 2009 campaign ranked No. 5 in the NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll and advanced to the NAIA National Championships Semifinals.
