DUBUQUE, IA --- League leaders in a number of their respective categories, Concordia ballplayers Andrew Brooks and Shayne O'Connell have been named River Valley League Co-Freshmen of the Year, it was announced this week.
Brooks, who redshirted in the 2010 season for the Eagles, posted a 2.40 ERA and fanned 34 batters in 30 frames this summer. His ERA and strikeout figures were both second in the league, while he held opponents to a league-low .209 batting average.
O'Connell, who hit .333 in 23 games (including 12 starts) as a 2010 freshman for the Eagles, led the River Valley League with 34 hits and was second in three other categories, including a .386 batting average.
O'Connell also picked up a pair of wins on the hill for the River Valley Hawks, coached by 2010 Concordia graduate assistant Ryan Hanson, who received second place in the voting for Manager of the Year.
O'Connell and 2010 Concordia redshirt Michael Mendoza both garnered Gold Glove recognition in the league.
