PORTLAND, OR --- It was the last season opener of
Mickey Mendoza's collegiate career, and he made sure it would be one to remember, as the Concordia senior punched home the eventual difference-maker in a 2-0 win over Evergreen State (WA).
The Eagles start their season with a win for the second year in a row and improve head coach
Chris Gould's record to 2-0 in season-openers with the men, as Mendoza scored his fourth career goal and matches his 2009 goal output on day one of the campaign.
Mendoza took a pass from freshman midfielder
Neil Anaya, who had taken advantage of a defensive breakdown and created space before passing to Mendoza for the finish in the 31st minute of the game.
Concordia showed its poise on set plays with its second goal of the game, when sophomore midfielder
Aaron Kasser served a corner kick to senior defender
Jeff Coulter, who headed in the game's second and final goal in the 68th minute.
Senior goalkeeper
Mike Radchuk, coming off a season where he allowed just 1.13 goals per game, held Evergreen State scoreless, but had to turn away only one shot throughout.
Mendoza and senior forward
Roi Castro each attempted three shots in the match, as Concordia out-shot Evergreen State by a 16-2 margin. The Eagles also attempted seven corner kicks and kept their opponent from getting a chance at the corner.
Nearly three minutes after Coulter scored his goal, senior midfielder
Alex Picarelli was shown a yellow card, which turned out to be the game's only caution.
The Eagles next square off at Concordia-Oregon this coming Sunday (Aug. 22), starting at 3 p.m. in Portland.
