PORTLAND, OR --- In a re-match of the 2008 NAIA Opening Round showdown that ended with a heart-breaking 9-8 penalty shootout loss, Concordia went down a goal early on to its sister school in Portland, but recovered in time for a 3-1 victory to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Much has changed since the end of the 2008, most notably the head-coaching change that Chris Gould at the program's helm to begin 2009. But, six players who saw field time in Sunday's victory were on the squad two years ago, including senior forward Carlos Suarez, who came off the bench to score the eventual game-winner.

Suarez first took to the field in the 15th minute of what was already a 1-1 tie, and he scored in the 21st minute after collecting a ball that Cavaliers' goalkeeper Claudio Lazar had misplayed and burying it in the goal to give the Eagles the lead at 2-1.

Concordia-Oregon had taken a 1-0 advantage midway through the fifth minute of the contest when Zach Madison chipped Eagle senior keeper Mike Radchuk, but senior forward Roi Castro answered with a goal in the 15th minute when he drilled a free kick home from nearly 30 yards out.

With the Eagles leading by a goal headed to the second half, senior forward Bruno Sad punched home the team's third goal of the game thanks to a nifty pass by junior midfielder William Velasquez that made the final score 3-1.

On the afternoon, the Eagles out-fouled the Cavaliers by a tally of 16-10, and senior defender Brandon Rigoni was shown a yellow card early on while two Cavaliers were issued cautions throughout the match.

The Eagles wrap up their three-game trip with a matchup against Warner Pacific (OR) Monday afternoon (Aug. 23) starting at 1:15 p.m. at Portland Christian High School.
