John Wright became the second head coach in program history of Concordia men's water polo and third head coach of the women's water polo team in the summer of 2012. Wright served 2011 on the women's water polo and swimming coaching staffs at Cypress College in Cypress, CA. He had also been a club coach for the SOCAL Aquatics Swim Club since 2009. John relies heavily on his strong Lutheran faith and long history of involvement with water polo and aquatics.
Wright saw great success as the director and head coach of the Golden West Water Polo Club from 1983 to 2006. He oversaw 175 active members per year, ages 7-25. His 18U women's squad were three-time national champions and his 20U women's team claimed one national championship.
Wright was the head coach of the Women's USA National Junior Water Polo team from 2000-2002. In 2001 his squad won the gold medal at the World Championships in Perth, Australia and the Pan American Games in Venezuela. The medal in the World Championships represented the first water polo gold medal for the USA in any World Championships at any level. During the same time period Wright served as an assistant with the USA National Team, as they captured titles at the Thetis Cup (Greece), Canada Cup, and Holiday Cup (USA). He toured with the Australian National Team in 2000 as they prepared for the Olympic Games in Sydney.
From 2005-2010 he was the head coach of the men's and women's swimming and water polo teams at Santa Ana College. He also taught physical education at the school. From 1996-2005 he led the Golden West College women's water polo and swimming programs. Wright coached the Golden West men's water polo team in 1998 and the men's swimming team in 2001. His water polo squads were crowned state champions in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003. Wright's swimming teams were state champions in 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002. He was an assistant for the men's water polo team from 1995-1997.
From 1991-1996 Wright was the head coach of the water polo and swimming programs at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, CA. His 1995 women's water polo team was CIF Southern Section Champions in 1995. The boy's swimming squad was CIF Champions in 1993 and his boy's water polo team was the CIF Runner-Up in 1995. He was an assistant at Marina HS from 1983-1991.
Wright was voted the US Water Polo Southern Pacific Zone Elite Women's Coach of the Year in 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2005. He was featured as a Face in the Crowd in Sports Illustrated in 2002. He was selected the California Coaches Association Community College Women's Swimming Coach of the Year in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2008, and was voted the Women's Water Polo Coach of the Year in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001. Wright was the CIF Water Polo Coach of the Year in 1995 and OC Register Swim Coach of the Year in 1993.
Wright is a member of the United States Water Polo Master Level, United States Swimming ASCA 2, Southern California Community College Coaches Association for Swimming and Water Polo, and the American Swim Coaches Association.
He received his Associate's Degree from Golden West College and Bachelor's from the US Sport Academy.
John is married to Lisa and the couple has three children. They have two boys, Jack, 6, and Bobby, 5. They also have a daughter, Makenna, 8.

Justin Johnson joined Concordia in 2013 in his first year as an assistant coach for the women's water polo team.
Johnson is a graduate of UCLA, where he played defender for the Bruin's water polo squad. While there he was a two-time NCAA All-American.
He enjoyed a lengthy international career where playing professionally in Spain for Real Canoe, Brazil for Botafogo, and in Australia for the Hunter Hurricanes. He was a member of 2009 FINA World Championship team, as well as the 2009 World League team.
Johnson was a four-time All-American in swimming at Mission Viejo High School and member of the 18 & under Youth National Team in 2003.
