Head Coach- 2nd Season
 

In his second role as a collegiate head coach, Jim Brewer enters his second season as Concordia's head coach for cross-country and track and field in 2012-2013. In 2012 Two Eagles claimed individual track and field titles at the GSAC Championships while Rick Avila was named a 2011 All-American as a member of the men's cross-country team.  He coached one NAIA All-American in indoor and outdoor track and field in 2012, respectively.

Brewer and his wife, Rachel, most recently began the aforementioned programs at University of Great Falls (MT) in 2007, and he piloted both squads through the 2010-11 academic year.

Before taking the position at Great Falls, Brewer served as an assistant coach over two stints (1996-97 and 2003-07) at his alma mater, Western Washington University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1998.

Brewer, who made community involvement a priority over his four seasons at Great Falls, has also been involved with Athletes in Action for several years, most recently serving as the men's chaplain for a group of student-athletes to Kenya on a three-week trip in 2009.

An NAIA All-American runner as an undergraduate, Brewer began his coaching career at Stanwood (WA) High School back in 1990, and coached throughout his collegiate career at Mount Baker High School in Deming, Wash., and at Western Washington.

His first collegiate coaching stint came at Western Washington in 1996-97, the year before he graduated, and he returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 2003, where he served until accepting his first head coaching position at Great Falls in 2007.

Brewer holds United States Sports Academy level III coaching certification.

He also holds U.S. Track and Field level II certification.

Jim and his wife Rachel will celebrate their 11-year anniversary this November and their son, Holden, will turn 3 in February.  They welcomed their second child, daughter, Karen, in March of 2012.

Assistant Coach- 2nd Season
 

Mark Sellers enters his second season on the Concordia coaching staff as assistant cross country and track & field coach in 2012-2013.  Coach Sellers helps guide student athletes to improve and be competitive, and help the Irvine roster grow and return the Eagles to competitive standing in the GSAC Conference.

Mark spent six years coaching with the Mt. Hood track and field team and was an integral part of rebuilding the Saints track and field teams to competitiveness in the NWAACC Conference.  His initial responsibilities were working as the jumps coach.  Later, in addition to jumps, Mark helped coach sprints, relays, and multi-events.  During Sellers' time at Mt. Hood, the Saints women finished second twice in NWAACC, while taking the Southern Region title twice.  The Saints men were consistently on the top half of NWAACC. In his six years with Mt. Hood Sellers was a part of, or directly coached, athletes that earned one NWAACC record, 30 NWAACC Individual Championships, 88 All-Americans, five women's school records, and 3 men's school records.

In addition to coaching at Mt. Hood, Mark joined the staff at Parkrose High School coaching the jumps for the 2008 season.  Mark's first coaching experience was coaching high jump and relays at Oregon City High School. 

Mark's athletic career began in Oregon City, Oregon were he played basketball, soccer, and competed in track.  After high school, Mark competed for Mt. Hood Community College and Portland State University in track and field.  Mark was an Oregon State Meet track and field competitor and placed third in NWAACC in the high jump for Mt. Hood. 

 

Mark earned an Associate's Degree from Mt. Hood Community College, a Bachelor's Degree in social science from Portland State University, and is currently working toward a Master's Degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration at Concordia.  Mark holds USATF Level II Certifications in Jumps, Sprints/Hurdles/Relays, and Youth coaching; and is an Association Level Official.  Mark also has a Track and Field Technical Coaching certification with the USTFCCA.

Assistant Coach- 2nd Season
 

Rachel Brewer joins her husband and head coach, Jim Brewer, in 2012 as an assistant for the Concordia cross-country and track & field teams. Brewer's coaching experience includes seven years as an assistant at the collegiate level (University of Great Falls and Western Washington University) and four years at the high school/middle school level.

Prior to moving to Montana in 2007 to help her husband start up a new cross-country/track & field program at the University of Great Falls, Brewer was a math and science teacher for 10 years. She earned her undergraduate degree in education, physical science, and mathematics from Northern Arizona University and went on to earn her master's degree in counseling from Regent University.

A lifetime runner, Brewer, earned twelve state championships from the state of Washington in cross-country/track & field for Cascade High School. She then continued her running career as a scholarship athlete for Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Living and training at 7,000 feet above sea level, Brewer helped lead the nationally-ranked women's team to a top 10 finish at the NCAA Division I cross-country championships in 1996. She individually qualified for the NCAA DI track & field championships in 1998 for the 3,000 meters.

Brewer's personal bests include 16:55 for the 5K (cross-country), 9:28 for 3,000 meters, 4:28 for 1,500 meters, 2:12 for 800 meters, and 4:48 for the mile.

In addition to running and coaching, Brewer enjoys playing the piano, cooking, backpacking, camping, spending time with her family, and being a mom. Brewer, and her husband, Jim, will celebrate their 11-year anniversary this November and their son, Holden, will turn 3 in February.  They welcomed their second child, daughter, Karen, in March of 2012.

Assistant Coach- 1st Season
 

Brian "BJ" Vandrovec begins his first season with the Concordia track and field teams in 2012-2013.  Originally from Fountain Valley, CA, Vandrovec competed in the pole vault and graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 2006.

Vandrovec has been the head coach and owner of the Victory Athletics Pole Vault Club since 2004.  He has coached a high school state finalist every year and had a third place finisher in 2010 and 2011.  Vandrovec has also coached a Junior Olympic national qualifier and USA Track & Field Junior national qualifier every year.  In 2012 one of his athletes was ranked #7 in the nation and qualified for the Olympic Team Trials with a vault of 5.60 m.

He has also been the Pole Vault Director at Mission Viejo High School since 2010.  Vandrovec was an assistant at Cal State Fullerton following his graduation in 2006 until 2010.  While there, he coached All-Big West Conference athletes every season.  He had two Big West Scholar Athletes of the Year, multiple NCAA Division I West Regional qualifiers, and a 100% graduation rate among athletes.

His personal best in the pole vault at Fullerton was 5.15 m and he qualified for the NCAA West Regional in 2006.  He is ranked #2 all-time in the pole vault at Fullerton.  In 2003 he was the California Junior College State Champion while competing for Golden West College.  He is also ranked #2 all-time at Golden West College. 

Vandrovec received his B.A. in Public Relations from Cal State Fullerton in 2006.  He enjoys fitness and personal training.  He likes to read, surf, and enjoys good food.

Assistant Coach- 1st Season

Shannon Popp is originally for Ojai, Ca.

Popp coached at California Lutheran University for two seasons (2010-2012). While at Cal Lutheran she had three National Champions, six SCIAC Conference Champions, five National Qualifiers, five school records, and 27 All-Conference Honors.

For the past few summers, Popp has been a coach at Ironwood Throws Camp in the state of Washington. Ironwood is a fundamental camp teaching young athletes as well as post collegiate athletes about throwing.

She went to Nordhoff High school.  It was there she received nine Varsity letters. After graduation she attended Moorpark Junior College. While attending Moorpark College, Popp was a state qualifier in the hammer, discus and shot put. After two years, Popp received an athletic scholarship to Kanas State (2004-2005), and then transferred and graduated with a Bachelors of Science from the University of Wyoming in 2007. She threw the hammer, weight, shot and discus in college and competed in the Mountain West Conference Championship in the hammer and the weight in 2007. After college she threw post collegiately for VS Athletics. She still has their club record in the hammer.  While throwing for VS Athletics, Popp coached at Moorpark College with her coach, Bob Mackay.

Away from track and field she loves outdoor activities, cooking, arts and crafts, as well as traveling.  She is the youngest out of three children of James and Kari Popp.  Both parents and one of her brothers, Jason, still reside in Ojai, CA. Her other brother, Aaron, is married, to Heather, with two daughters, Hayven and Harper, and live and works in Clovis, CA.

Assistant Coach- 1st Season
 

Al Berrin joined the Concordia track and field, and cross country staffs in 2012.  Berrin started coaching in 1978 and has coached at the NCAA Division I level (University of San Francisco), junior college (Skyline College in San Bruno, CA), and 15 years as a high school head coach at various schools in the San Francisco Bay Area.  He had coached athletes to state appearances in every track event.

He has coached three Olympians, including Shannon Rowbury, who won a bronze medal in the World Championships and finished sixth and seventh in the last two Olympics.  He coached Nicole Tester, an American record-holder in the 800m indoors, and two-time Olympian.  Berrin spent three years with the Nike Farm Team, which sent 35 participants to the 2008 Olympic Trials.

Berrin is a retired school teacher who spent 30 years teaching kindergarten to high school.  He started his coaching career at St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco, CA.  His runners advance to the State Championships every year and his best finish came in 2004 when his men took third.

He is a veteran, having served the US Army from 1966-1968 in San Antonio and Vietnam.  He is certified level two in endurance and sprints, and taught for five years at the USA Track & Field Coaching Education Certification Schools. 

He has been married to his wife Kathleen for 42 years.  The couple has three children and two grandchildren.

Assistant Coach- 1st Season
 

Jesse White joined the Concordia track and field staff in 2012-13 as the sprints, hurdles, and relays coach.  Jesse White began his coaching career in 2001 as an assistant sprints and hurdle coach for Edison High School in Fresno, CA.  While there he has assisted or directly coached a CIF qualifier every year. He also assisted in coaching the team to three consecutive Central Valley Championships, and assisted in coaching several athletes each year in breaking the school records in the sprint, hurdle, and relay events. While at Edison, Jesse and the staff sent several athletes on to well-known universities.  

For the past two years White has been a head coach at the high school level.  His first head coaching position was at McLane High School in Fresno, CA.  White was then offered the position as the head coach at Sunnyside High School, also in Fresno, CA.  Prior to becoming a head coach, Jesse White coached at UC Davis, and Fresno State, where he assisted in coaching the sprint, hurdle, and relay events.

As an athlete White doubled as the Northern Section of the California State Junior College Championships in the 400 Meter Intermediate Hurdles and the 110 Meter High Hurdles while at Fresno City College.  Jesse Placed fourth in the California Junior College State Championships in the 110 Meter High Hurdles.  His times earned a place among the colleges' All-Time Top Ten record list.  He also received a track and field scholarship to attend Fresno State where he went on to place sixth in the Western Athletic Conference Championships meet in the High Hurdles.  While at Fresno State White also ran the 4x100M Relay, and assisted on the 4x400m Relay as well. 

White earned an associate's degree from Fresno City College, and received his bachelor's degree from Fresno State in communications.  Coach White is currently working on a master's degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration at Concordia.

White holds a Level I and level II USA Track and Field Coaching certification in the Sprints/Hurdles/Relay events.  Coach White attributes his achievements to being blessed and highly favored by God.

White enjoys spending time with his family, Mother, Maria, Dad, Jesse, three sisters, LaDora, Rebecca, Rachel, and their respective families, and his Daughter Deja.  White also enjoys traveling, eating, and working out.

Student Assistant- 1st Season
 

Kaitlyn Todd joins the Concordia track & field coaching staff as a student assistant in 2012-13.  Todd, originally from Walnut, CA, comes most recently from Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut where she worked as a team manager with cross country/track & field. 

She was born on February 2, 1991 in Fountain Valley, CA to Douglas and Janet.  Her brother, Matt, competes in the pole vault at Cal State Northridge.  Her sister, Mallory, plays soccer at Menlo College.

She is majoring in English and minoring in history.  She plans to be a librarian after graduation.  Todd enjoys reading, shopping, and watch television and movies.
